HyperTerminal in Windows 7 and Vista

HyperTerminal is not included in Windows 7 and Vista.
I combined a list of alternative utilities that can be used instead.

First is PuTTy

PuTTy is a terminal program designed not only for Serial port connections , it can be used to initiate SSH or Telnet sessions.

Second is Realterm

Realterm is a serial/tcpip terminal program which can be used for , controlling and debugging binary and other difficult data streams. It is far better for debugging comms than Hyperterminal. It has no support for dialing modems, BBS etc – that is what hyperterminal does.

Third is TeraTerm

Tera Term (Pro) is a free software terminal emulator (communication program) for MS-Windows. It supports VT100 emulation, telnet connection, serial port connection, and so on.

Alternatively you can use legacy windows XP hyperterm by downloading the following file and extract it in your system32 folder.

Microsoft released set of Daylight Saving updates back in December 2009.

Time Zone changes since last MS update

Argentina Standard Time:
Removes DST for 2010 and later years.

Central Brazilian Standard Time:
Updates dynamic DST table.
Changes DST end date for 2010.

E. South America Standard Time:
Updates dynamic DST table; Changes DST end date for 2010.

Egypt Standard Time:
Changes the DST end date for 2009.
Changes the TZI for 2010.

Georgian Standard Time:
Changes the display name and time zone bias from UTC+3 to UTC+4.

Greenland Standard Time:
Changes the TZI for 2010 for operating systems earlier than Windows Vista.

Jerusalem Standard Time:
Changes the TZI for 2010 for operating systems earlier than Windows Vista.

Morocco Standard Time:
Changes the TZI for 2010 for operating systems earlier than Windows Vista.

N. Central Asia Standard Time:
Removes “Almaty” from the “(GMT+06:00) Almaty, Novosibirsk” time zone.

North Asia East Standard Time:
Removes “Ulaan Bataar” from the “(GMT+08:00) Irkutsk, Ulaan Bataar” time zone.

Pakistan Standard Time:
Changes the TZI for 2010 for operating systems earlier than Windows Vista.

Paraguay Standard Time:
Changes the TZI for 2010 for operating systems earlier than Windows Vista.

Ulaanbaatar Standard Time:
Creates the Ulaanbaatar Standard Time time zone with the display name of “(GMT+08:00) Ulaanbaatar”.

W. Australia Standard Time:
Removes DST for 2010 and later years

Windows 7 Search in Start Menu bar is broken

I got this after installing some update, can’t say exactly which.
The problem symptom is that when you type anything in search bar it looks like that

To solve it.

Go to Run> type regedit.exe

Navigate to :HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\Explorer\FolderTypes\{EF87B4CB-F2CE-4785-8658-4CA6C63E38C6}\TopViews\

You will see a key named {00000000-0000-0000-0000-000000000000}
Just rename it to anything else like {00000000-0000-0000-0000-000000000000}.Orig

After you rename the key , start Task manager and kill the explorer.exe process

Run the process again from file>New Task (Run..)

Type in bar explorer.exe

And Walla!

It works!

Microsoft published a hotfix that addresses the issue in Windows 7 and 2008R2

Windows 7 Installation – Step by Step Guide

Congratulation with the release of windows 7 operation system.

The new OS is faster, prettier and easier to use then older windows versions.

To install Windows 7 on your computer follow the guide bellow.

First confirm that you inserted your installation DVD or Pen Drive to your PC.( Read here how to create a windows 7 bootable USB key)
Insure that your PC Bios is been set up to boot from CD/DVD/USB
When you see the Press any Key to boot from CD or DVD hit Enter
Disk will load installation menu and will show language chose menu.
After installation language is chosen press “next”
On next window press on Install now
Here we chose on which disk Windows 7 will be installed.
Chose automatic or custom installation, I recommend Custom
Here we chose if we want to do windows update during installation , preferred is to do updates after clean install.
Windows will start installation and you don’t need to do anything till the end.

Create ncpa.cpl shortcut to Network Connections

In Vista Windows 2008 or Windows 7 when you right-click the network icon in the navigation area, but it does not take you directly to the Network Connections properties as we are used to in Windows XP 2000 or 2003 .
You can access Network Connections management menu by running ncpa.cpl from run menu or you can create a shortcut that will access those menu by key combination.

To create ncpa.cpl shortcut

Right-click on the desktop
Click: New>Shortcut
Type the location of the item: ncpa.cpl
Choose a suitable name, e.g. ‘Network Connection’
Right-click on the newly created shortcut
Select Properties and seek the dialog box called Shortcut Key.
Simply over-type ‘None’ with the combination that suits you, for example:
Ctrl +Alt +N. Start by holding the Ctrl key, ‘None’ should change.
Now by pressing on Ctrl +Alt+N Network Connection Properties will Open.

Creating shortcuts using control panel applets (CPL files) can be be very useful.

Block Access to My Computer Properties Menu in Windows 7 and Vista

In System properties window you can various information about Windows system .
You may wish to block it to prevent users from accessing it and do changes.

You can easily disable access to My Computer context menu through AD Group Policy.
This solution doesn’t block access to menus, only hides it from right click. Menu can still be accessed Windows key + Pause/Break key.

To disable it Open Group Policy Manager
Navigate to User Configuration > Policies > Administrative Templates > Desktop
Double Click on “Remove Properties from the Computer icon context menu” and change it to “Enabled”

How to Create Windows 7 USB Bootable installation

To make Windows 7 deployment easier Microsoft has released a small utility that allows you install Windows 7 from a USB flash drive.

The Windows 7 USB/DVD utility allows you to create a copy of your Windows 7 installation ISO file on a any USB flash disk or a DVD.

Windows 7 USB/DVD Utility System Requirements:

Windows XP SP2, Windows Vista, or Windows 7 (32-bit or 64-bit)
Pentium 233-megahertz (MHz) CPU
50MB of free disk space
DVD-R drive or 4GB removable USB flash drive

After you run the tool there is 4 steps wizard .

In step 1: You are providing full path to ISO image.

In step 2: You chose USB Device.

In step 3: You select the USB device and press Start Over.
