Whether it is a landscape, a portrait, or a street scene, every photograph tells a story, and every story needs a hero.
In photography, the hero is the subject of the photograph, the character that draws the viewer’s attention and creates an emotional connection.
The hero doesn’t have to be a person, it can be an object, an animal, or even a concept, but it is the central element that carries the story and gives the photo its meaning.
How to make a subject stand out in a photo – How to make him a hero?
When we are working with a single subject, identifying the hero is easy , the object is the hero. But how about multiple objects? How do we identify heroes when there are many ?
There are many ways to make one of the many more important , so let’s see how. This is far from the whole list , but can give you an idea of how to approach the problem.
He could be performing some action.
He could be positioned in the center of the frame.
He could have a different color
She could have a different color
By using depth of field – Usage of a low aperture value will blur the other people in the background and will make our hero pop . In this particular photograph our hero is centered and performs a gesture , all together leave no doubt about who the hero is.
Having strong eye contact immediately points out the hero.
Light on the subject can suggest who the hero is.
He would be bigger – He will take a bigger percentage of the frame
Everyone will look at him, or what he is doing.
This list can keep going and going.
It doesn’t matter which way you choose to show your hero , just make sure he is different from the rest of the potential heroes in the frame, or there is something that points out his importance.

Can a photograph have more than one hero ?
Yes, it is often the case when everyone is a hero . To achieve that there should be a situation when no one stands out . Everyone, or no one is looking at the camera , everyone is the same size, no one’s clothes standout in any way and the light illuminates everyone equally .
